Which NBA Star Deserves a Signature Sneaker?

As the years go on in the NBA, more and more promising talents become bonafide basketball superstars. But as talented and as world-beating as some players may end up becoming, not all of them end up winning championships. However, in a world where sports stars are celebrities in their own right, sometimes the only sign an NBA player needs to know he's made it is to have a shoe to call his own.

In terms of the bigger sportswear brands, the landscape of signature athletes remained relatively unchanged for a good amount of time. However, shifts were already being seen during the tail end of last year. John Wall (though previously a signature athlete with Reebok) dropped his first signature under Adidas last October. Kyrie Irving was officially added to the Nike Basketball family of signature athletes when his first shoe released this earlier this month. Forthcoming signatures from Damian Lillard (Adidas) and Stephen Curry (Under Armour) are dropping very soon as well.

While the present may be a great time for signature shoes, the fact remains that athletes with their own signature lines possess a mix of stellar on-court performance and marketability. With that in mind let's look at some NBA talents who seem fit to eventually carry their own brands.

Adidas Football - #ThereWillBeHaters

When you're really good at something, you're bound to have haters. That's the insight Adidas has ran with to introduce their newest collection of football boots. The German sportswear giants have enlisted the help of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, James Rodriguez and Luis Suarez (with each man no stranger to on-pitch and online hate) to usher in the "Haters" Pack. The collection spans four of Adidas Football's flagship boots, namely the Adipure 11Pro, Nitrocharge, Predator Instinct as well as the newly-designed F50 Adizero. Hopefully the entire pack finds its way soon to local Adidas shops and specialty football retailers. But if you can't wait that long, they're already up for pre-order on sites like Pro-Direct Soccer.

The Sneaker Colorway That Should Go Away in 2015

I've always found it interesting how sneaker culture puts a premium on colorways and the stories they tell. I think it's great how a simple combination of colors can reference a country, a moment in history, or something in the ever-changing world of popular culture. However, like any story, a colorway done way too many times loses its impact every time a new shoe bearing the same hues comes out. Don't get me wrong. There a few colorways out there that are timeless. But at the same time, there are few that were better off as a one-and-done. And with that in mind, the color scheme I want to see gone this year is the "Red October"/Tonal Red look.

When an all-red version of Kanye West's second shoe with Nike dropped out of the blue last year, the internet went crazy. The hype was at its usual levels but it soon reached fever pitch when Nike released them online without any prior warning. Lucky sneakerheads picked them up, while thousands of Kanye Stans were left salty and bitter. Since then, Nike and other brands have tried to recapture that lightning in a bottle moment by pumping out sneakers in tonal red colors. And with the lines between streetwear and high fashion almost nonexistent at this point, even luxury footwear brands got in on the action as well.

It's gotten to a point where almost every wannabe sneaker designer throws the colorway up on a pair of customs. Sadly, with news of an all-red Foamposite and a "Red October" SB Dunk in the works for this year, it looks like this trend is going to suffer a long, drawn out death.

Adidas Originals: #OriginalSuperstar

The Adidas Superstar belongs to an elite club of sneakers that enjoys widespread appeal across a range of subcultures. Whether in sports, music, fashion or street culture, the Adidas Superstar is always relevant. This year marks the silhouette's 45th anniversary, and it's no surprise that The Three Stripes will be looking to celebrate in a big way.

To build anticipation for future releases, Adidas released a short yet stunning video featuring Rita Ora, David Beckham, Dame Lillard and Pharrell Williams where they talk about the misconceptions of what the word "Superstar" means.

Nike Inside Access - The Science of Traction

Traction is a huge factor in terms of how sports shoes are supposed to perform. No matter what sport you're playing, you want the satisfaction of knowing your shoes are going to help keep you in control of your movements at any point of a game. And with sports that put a premium on footwork like football and basketball, that satisfaction goes a long way when the game's on the line.

With over 42 years of experience, the folks at Nike Basketball know a thing or two about traction technology. Based on athlete input, Nike has developed a four-part formula to evaluate the effectiveness of traction: surface type (indoor, outdoor or both), design pattern, surface ratio and rubber composition. This evaluation method helps maintain a high performance standard while evolving designs and materials.

Nike Air Force 1 High "Nai Ke"

In a rather interesting move by Nike, this Air Force 1 was built based on the shoe's shape when it originally released in 1982. That means that the shoes will be as closed to getting "remastered" without Nike officially using the term. Constructed with premium white leather with striking accents of red in suede and other materials, these Nike Air Force 1s feature the Chinese characters "Nai Ke" (the brand's name in China) embroidered on the heel. If you're enjoying the resurgence of the Air Force 1 and want to add these to your collection, you'll have to hit up your oriental connects soon as these shoes are set to drop in China come January 16th.
