The year 2015 may only be a few years old, but just like the start of every year, the resolutions have come crawling out in multiples. Now while there's nothing wrong with wanting to become a better person this year, the thing with resolutions is they rarely work out. But that shouldn't stop people from trying though.
Like regular folks, sneakerheads aren't strangers to new year's resolutions. So if you don't have one yet, hit the jump for a few ideas to help you get the most out of your new year in sneakers.
1. Get out of your comfort zone.
Craving for an adventure or wanting to travel more is a pretty common resolution that you might have made at one point in your life. Why not apply the same thought to your kicks? I'm not telling you to travel far and wide just for shoes (though I wouldn't stop you if you had the means). I'm saying if your collection is deep with Nikes, maybe throw a couple Adidas pairs in the rotation. If you haven't been paying attention, other sportswear brands have been killing it in recent years, and the high-end folks have entered the game as well. Diversity is a good thing.
2. Budget.
Let's face it. Collecting sneakers is not a cheap hobby. But in an age where something's always on and popping in social media, the pressure to keep up can set off some questionable decisions when it comes to your personal finances. It's cool to pass on a release every now and then. When faced with a multitude of sneakers dropping on a weekend, or within a month, ask yourself which ones do you really want and save the cash for them. A humble collection of kicks you paid for is infinitely cooler than having mountains of shoes but with zero in the bank.
3. Chill Out on Social Media
Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are rife with humble-braggers in all shapes and forms. Posting a shot of the latest pair you splashed some cash on isn't that much different, so you might as well keep it simple. Nobody needs to see "high-concept" photography stuff like "Black/Red" Air Jordan 1s beside some bread, or pouring Sprite on a pair of Lebron 8s. And if you're the type who lives and dies by the number of likes, comments, and "features" you get for your shoes, you need some serious help reassessing your life goals.
4. Sell for a Fair Price
Let's face it, the resell game is crazy. It's been that way for a long time now. But there's a difference between doing people a service and purely taking advantage of a situation. We've seen it before when hyped shoes start going on sale for double their retail prices hours or even minutes after they drop. Paying someone a little extra for shoes when you've got no chance of buying them in a store sounds alright, but when it's taken to the extreme, you might as well just get something else instead of spending way over what you really should be paying.
5. Form Your Own Opinion
Leave it to social media to promote the rise of the Shoe-lebrity, people on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram known for their shoes. When they speak out about the culture, their posts are met with thousands of co-signs from thirsty folks looking for a nod of recognition. I'm not talking smack about popular sneakerheads, all I'm saying is that it's okay to have your own opinion on shoes and the culture. It's so easy to hop on Google and do some research. Ground your views on some facts. You might not have the most popular stance on the culture, but don't "Just Do It" for the approval of people you don't even know outside of social media. Just Do You.
